Welcome to One on One(vinn) - Karin Bui Källkvist
Alexander Martinsson has been a part of Onevinn since 2022. It all started with a post on a Discord channel, where he found out that Onevinn was looking for part-time Security Analysts. Since then, Alexander has balanced his studies at the University of Gothenburg with working at Onevinn, eventually transitioning into a full-time role after graduation. Today, he is a highly valued Senior Cybersecurity Analyst L3 at Onevinn.
“You could say that I have a bit of a hybrid role in my job. One part of it is to stop threat actors from gaining access to our customers’ digital environments. The other part involves more customer-focused work, ranging from writing reports and engaging with customers to training end users on how to identify phishing attempts, malicious emails, and other security threats.”
I asked Alexander about his experience joining Onevinn as a part-time worker and he shared:
“My experience was great. Onevinn had a welcoming culture embedded in its DNA, and my department, Managed Detection and Response (MDR), was a close-knit team. People weren't just colleagues, they quickly became friends.”
Onevinn MDR is a 24/7/365 service, it’s the next evolution of the traditional Security Operations Center, monitoring and responding to threats seamlessly. The 24/7 monitoring is handled by experienced security analysts, which means that the working hours are untraditional. Something that seemed to work well for Alexander as a student.
“Working shifts gave me a lot of flexibility and included plenty of weekend work, which fit well around my university schedule while also providing additional compensation for evening and weekend shifts. Something that was very welcome with the limited budget you have as a student”.
Studying System Science and working as Security Analyst gave Alexander the opportunity to learn a lot about IT and Cybersecurity. Alexander explains that the difference for him was that his studies were broad and general, which gave him a solid foundation, but they often lacked depth and specialization.
“I gained much more of that aspect through working at Onevinn. Studies are always very theory-heavy, so balancing them with real-world and practical experience helped me broaden my knowledge and build a stronger foundation for professional life ahead.”
Alexander was promoted from Cybersecurity Analyst L2 to Senior Cybersecurity Analyst L3 in 2025, a change made possible by his hard work and dedication.
With time, Alexander shares that he felt that he had outgrown his L2 role and wanted a bit more of a challenge. The steps required to advance to L3 meant taking additional initiative outside what he had done before. Alexander also talked about his aspirations to be a role model for his colleagues and contribute to elevating the team even further.
“I think that being a team player, taking initiative to learn and be dependable is what made the process move forward.”
Alexander explains the difference between the two roles:
“L2 is generally more reactive, while L3 is more proactive. What I mean by that is that the L2 role is more centered around set expectations and day-to-day operational work, such as sitting in the ticketing system, acknowledging and investigating incidents, and taking appropriate actions based on your own and your colleague’s judgment.
L3 is still reactive in many ways, since you’re often the person L2 escalates larger or more complex incidents to and depends on during those situations. But on the proactive side, L3 involves much more self-governance and ownership over your work. There’s more planning, stakeholder management, consulting-oriented responsibilities, and a greater focus on improving processes, services, and the overall security posture rather than only responding to incidents.”
Alexander has spent years learning and expanding his knowledge, always rising to meet new challenges. As someone who took a step into the cybersecurity field before even graduating, Alexander shares some of his experiences:
“Impostor syndrome is definitely real. Looking back, what I would do differently is not assume that my theoretical knowledge defines my ability to perform the job well. If I were starting from zero today, I would focus much more on the basics from the beginning.
In cybersecurity, especially as an analyst, you’re primarily working with customers, incidents, and pattern analysis rather than diving into deep technical details on day one. The technical depth comes with time. What matters early on is understanding workflows, recognizing behaviors, and learning how to think in terms of investigation and context rather than getting stuck on perfect technical knowledge upfront.”
Looking further back, I asked whether there were any skills Alexander had developed outside of school that still help him today. He shared that before he started studying, he worked in hospitality. Having that experience helped build a foundation that was applicable to what Alexander does now.
“That experience taught me how to communicate with different types of people, stay calm under pressure, and manage expectations in real time. Those skills translate directly into my current work, especially in consulting situations and stakeholder management, where it’s important to keep people informed, aligned, and confident in what’s being done.”
Alexander lives in Gothenburg and outside of work spends time with family and friends. A big part of his life is exercising and traveling. He's also a self-proclaimed foodie and enjoys exploring new restaurants whenever he gets the chance. When asked what he would do if time and resources were no limitation, Alexander replied:
“I would probably exercise even more, I'm a big fan of bodybuilding, which is a passion I share with my dad. We recently travelled to Södertälje to spectate an international bodybuilding competition. I would also try to travel more; there are a lot of destinations that are on my bucket list.”
I'd like to thank Alexander for taking the time to share his journey with us. From joining Onevinn as a student to becoming a Senior Cybersecurity Analyst L3, his story is a great example of how curiosity, dedication, and hard work can create new opportunities.
